I use my oven a lot, almost every day. After all of this cooking, my oven has gathered a thick layer of grime and grease. I am not alone, most people forget to clean their oven when cleaning the kitchen. I wanted to save you a trip to the store. So I put together instructions for an easy homemade oven cleaner. This will be sure to remove all of your gross grease and grime, making your oven look good as new.
“Why do I need to clean my oven?”
The grime and grease build-up is not only gross it can be dangerous. The fumes from cooking oven grime can contain harmful chemicals such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. Not only can this be harmful, but it can also make the food taste nasty.
Ingredients:
- 2 oz Hydrogen peroxide
- 2 oz Dish soap
- 4 oz Baking soda
- 1 tbsp Vinegar
- Squeeze of lemon
Materials:
- Scrub brush
- Sponge
- Rag/paper towels
- Gloves
Instructions:
1. Prepare
Make sure that all of the big stuff is removed from the oven. Often if you have neglected cleaning your oven it will have chunks of food and burnt pieces. Be sure to remove the big stuff so the mixture can dissolve the rest.
Pro-tip: Remove the racks and clean them. This will give you more space to work and it will look better.
2. Mix
Take all of the ingredients and mix them together. Stir until the mixture becomes thick.
3. Apply
Use the sponge to apply the mixture on the inside of the oven. I used gloves for this part. Be sure to coat the entire inside, all the walls, top, and bottom. Do Not Scrub!
4. Soak Overnight
I know you might want to scrub the oven but I promise it is better to wait. This gives the mixture time to chemically break down the gunk.
5. Scrub
After letting the mixture soak in the oven its time to scrub it. Use a scrub brush to remove all of the grease and gunk. Make sure to get all the way in the back.
6. Reapply
Use the rest of the mixture to recoat any places where there is existing gunk or grime.
7. Last Scrub
Use a sponge to scrub off any remaining gunk
8. Wipe Clean
Use paper towels or rags to wipe all the remaining cleaning mixture from the oven. Make sure to wipe clean.
9. Finish
Replace the oven racks and enjoy your new clean oven.
