How and Why You Should Wash Your Bed Pillows

Experts suggest washing bed pillows 2-3 times per year. Furthermore washing the outside bed pillow cover every 3 weeks. This is because your body releases oils, dirt, and dead cells that build up in your pillow.

“I shower before bed, there is no way my pillows are dirty”

Wrong, showering before bed can actually make your bed pillows worse. Getting in bed with wet hair can cause brown spots on your bed. The brown spots are dust and dirt sticking to the wet bed pillow. Regardless of how clean you are when you get in bed, the human body will release oils and dead cells.

Dirty pillows can attract dust mites. Dust mites are harmless but they’re also gross. The tiny dust mites feed on your old cells. Some people are allergic to dust mites. This can result in trouble sleeping comfortably.

What is The Best Way to Wash Bed Pillows

The best way to wash bed pillows is with warm water on a gentle cycle. I usually add an extra spin cycle. Here is a list of a simple cleaning solution…

  • ¼ borax
  • ½ bleach
  • ½ laundry detergent
  • ½ powdered detergent

Mix this in with the water before putting the pillows in. Sometimes washers have a hard time tumbling big pillows. Make sure to check on them. If part of a pillow is dry flip the pillows to ensure they get fully washed.

Can You Wash Bed Pillows in The Washing Machine

Yes, you can use a washing machine to wash bed pillows. Hand wash your pillows only if your pillows are filthy and you don’t want to buy new ones. When washing with your hands use the same solution mixed in with warm water. After the mixture soaks into the pillow use your hands to massage and squeeze. Do this over in over until you feel all the dirt and grime has been released from the pillow.
