Why Is Your Ceiling Fan Not Blowing Air Down

Ceiling fan not blowing air down

The main reason your ceiling fan is not blowing air down is the direction the blades are spinning. There are TWO directions that ceiling fans can be set to. Many people don’t know this and make this simple mistake. The two directions are clockwise and counter-clockwise.

Counter-clockwise pushing air down

If you want air to be pushed down you need to flip the switch on your fan to make it turn counter-clockwise. This is mostly used during the summertime. The downward blowing air creates a wind chill effect. This will make it feel as though your ceiling fan is cooling the room down.

Clockwise Draws Air Up

If you want air to be drawn upwards you need to reverse your fan to clockwise. This is used mostly during the winter. Your fan will draw warm air up and push it out towards the walls. This creates air circulation that will warm your house quicker and avoid the wind chill effect. This also improves your home heater’s efficiency.

Why Cant I feel air blowing from my ceiling fan?

If you can’t feel any air blowing from your fan it is most likely spinning in reverse or clockwise. This would cause it to blow air upwards towards the ceiling. This has to do with the tilt of the blades and the direction the blades are spinning.

How to fix this?

There should be a small switch on the ceiling fan above or between the blades on the motor. Flip this switch and the blades should spin in the other direction and start blowing are down.
